The British Parliament passed the Irish Poor Law, which created the Poor Law Unions and the workhouses in Ireland.
1893
Conradh na Gaeilge (the Gaelic League) was founded with Douglas Hyde as its first president "for the purpose of keeping the Irish language spoken in Ireland."
1917
Francis Ledwidge, poet, was killed in action at Ypres.
1922
Free State soldiers shot and killed Harry Boland at the Skerries Grand Hotel.
1947
The Soviet Union blocked Ireland's entry into the United Nations.
