The Sounds of Irish

Every language has its own catalogue of sounds. English speakers are all familiar with the German or French R-sounds as being different, and very difficult for them to pronounce. Similarly, the English W-sound is very difficult for German speakers to pronounce, and they often replace it with a V-sound. Most languages have thirty to forty sounds in their catalogue, and English is typical in this regard. Many Polynesian languages -- Hawaiian, for instance -- have only slightly more than a dozen. Some languages in the Caucasus and in the Pacific Northwest of North America have over eighty. The Irish language is on the upper end of this scale, making use of over fifty sounds. Use the links below to learn more about these sounds.
